Debashish Deb

1955 - Present

Debashish Deb is a well-known cartoonist particularly to those who follow Ananda Bazar Patrika diligently. His humorous illustrations have also appeared in Anandamela, The Telegraph, Sananda, etc. Debasish Deb, after his graduation from Government College of Arts and Crafts in 1979, realized that a formal art degree hardly equips one to become a cartoonist. Deciding to hone his skills on the job, Debasish began illustrating for Sandesh, where Satyajit Ray was one of the co-editors. Ray’s words of encouragement prompted him to do better. His enchantment with Ray helped him to grow stronger with time. He has illustrated novels of Bengali novelist  Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and Tarapada Roy. Debashish Deb’s signature style is the presence of felines in various moods and postures. He is also an enthusiastic trainer, researcher, and active member of Cartoon Dal. He is an admirer of and researcher on Satyajit Ray and has published a critically acclaimed book Rong Tulir Satyajit (Satyajit of Ink and Colour). Deb, who shoulders the burden of carrying forward the great tradition of cartooning in Bengal, has combined the best of two worlds: the old-world penchant for flawless drawing and the use of digital technology.
