Sorosh Cartoon

1990 - 1993

Amateur cartoonist Sukumar Roychowdhury’s Cartoon was first published in 1990.  Rechristened as Soros Cartoon, (Juicy Cartoons, সরস কার্টুন) a year later, it was the only magazine that took the last stand against the marginalization of this once-popular art. Most of the established newspapers had discontinued publishing editorial cartoons by then, and the once-formidable Joshtimadhu was on its last legs. Reboti Bhushan, Chandi Lahiri, Amal Chakraborty, Qazi, Ali (Kobi Saha), Shatadal, Partho Mitra (Dakoo), Prokash Ghosh, and Biswadeb Ganguly were regular contributors to Soros Cartoon.  Editor Sukumar Roychowdhury always welcomed new talents. As amateurishly executed cartoons did not suit his taste or temperament, Sukumar published works by new artists only when the cartoon was strong on ideas.  Soros Cartoon also featured humorous stories, satires, poems, and articles. Saila Chakraborty, who had by then withdrawn from political cartooning, revived his long-lost bond for this magazine. Since Sukumar could not find any publisher to sponsor his efforts, he set up a publishing house called Cartoon Prokashoni to ensure a smooth running for the magazine. He also took charge of the distribution and advertisement of the magazine. But it was unsustainable beyond a point because good words alone were not enough to keep the magazine afloat. Sukumar reluctantly and dejectedly called it quits and declared so in the last issue of the magazine.
