Rongo Byongo Roshikeshu

2003 - 2009

Birthed in 2003 by Pabitra Adhikary and Biswadeb Ganguly, Rongo Byango Roshikeshu (The Humour and Satire Magazine, রঙ্গ ব্যঙ্গ রসিকেসু), came late in the day but made up with humourous takes on issues, articles, fiction, and poems. It also documented cartoon practices. RBR in each of its issues published cartoons, which was significant because, by the 90s, cartoons had largely become marginal in mainstream publications. Reboti Bhushan Ghosh, Subhojit De, Rituparno Basu and Ashish Karmakar drew for the magazine. The magazine brought out an issue on Reboti Bhushan, for which Rebotibhushan himself- hale and hearty at that time – helped retrieve some of his works for archiving. The magazine also brought out commemorative issues on Ahibhushan Malik and Prafulla Chandra Lahiri. RBR’s Saila Chakraborty special issue was a product of painstaking research which won accolades from critics and cartoon enthusiasts. It was published during the centenary year of the artist. Rongo Byango Roshikeshu received the award for Best Little Magazine from the government of Bengal in 2004. The magazine was wound up in 2009 due to a lack of funds.
