Bishoy Cartoon

2006 - Present

Bishoy Cartoon (About Cartoons, বিষয় কার্টুন), a different kind of periodical devoted entirely to rebooting the beleaguered and waning art of cartooning in Bengal, is Biswadeb Ganguly’s labour of love. The simple, unassuming man is diligently scooping out forgotten riches from yellowing, forlorn, difficult-to-trace magazines, newspapers, books, and periodicals and showcasing it for posterity. It has,  since 2006 been archiving and giving back to us glimpses from the glorious cartooning past of Bengal.
A formidable cartoon collector, Biswadeb is an authority on the art of cartooning. His Cartoon Rongo Bichitra is a reliable source of information on cartooning. He has also edited a cartoon album based on the works of Prafulla Chandra Lahiri and has written extensively on Bengal cartoonists. In 2006, Bishoy Cartoon came out with a special issue on Kutty, the Malayali cartoonist, who for the most part of his life, drew for prominent Bengali newspapers like Anandabazar and Aajkal and magazines like Desh and Television. The first issue was well received, got rave reviews, with Kutty himself encouraging the editor’s efforts from the US. Special issues on Jatindra Kr Sen, Samar Dey, Rebotibhushan, Mayukh Chowdhury, Khaled Chowdhury, Binoy Basu, Pratul Bandopadhya and Chandi Lahiri were also well-received. Bishoy Cartoon even brought out issues on European masters like Herge (2008) and the legendary David Low (2020). The periodical is now a must-have for the cartoon-phile in Bengal.
